I must admit it took me a while to get used to winter. Don’t get me wrong there are a lot of good things about winter, but it does take some time to enjoy its arrival. But with time, when one season is finished, you start to look forward to the one that is approaching. So now I can say I appreciate winter, especially on days when you don’t need to be rushing out of the house to go to work. I do enjoy my days off in the winter time because to me it means being cosy and lazy.
I take my time in the morning, have my breakfast at a leisurely pace, take the dog for a walk and then come back to a hot cup of tea. Little else beats days like that. And a great companion in such days is my cherry pit pillow.
I find it very practical, all you need to do is warm it up in the microwave and it has a multitude of uses: to warm yourself up, to ease back or neck ache…in fact any type of ache. How is it different from a water bottle? Water bottles get too hot, the pits help to hold the heat at a very agreeable temperature and it lasts for a long time.

Cherry pit pillow
2 fabric squares 23×23 cm (it has to be 100% cotton). I actually used a piece measuring 23x46cm
Thread of similar colour to fabric
Scissors
Measuring tape
Cherry pits (you can use rice instead)

1. Place on the table the one piece of fabric with its wrong side facing down and on top of it place the second piece of fabric with the wrong side facing up. Pin the two pieces together.
2. When pinning leave a gap of 10 cm on one of the sides. This is not supposed to be sewn together as it will be the opening to put the pits in.

3. With the sewing machine, or by hand, sew the sides leaving a hem of 1cm. Don’t forget to leave the 10cm gap open!!!
4. Cut off the little corners of the sewn fabric diagonally, close to the stitching. Turn the little pillow right-side down. If needed push in the little corners with your scissors. Now give the pillow a little ironing.
5. Through the 10cm gap we left open fill the pillow with the pits. I fill it up to 2/3, don’t over stuff it!
6. Now all you need to do is sew the gap and it’s ready!

This cherry pit pillow can be heated in the microwave for 2.5 minutes (not any longer!) and can be used however you wish. It can also be put in the fridge in case you need it cold.
As it is heated in the microwave it is important that the fabric is 100% cotton. If you don’t have a microwave it can also be heated in the over at 150C for 10-15 minutes.
This little pillow is also a great gift idea! I often make smaller versions for friends that have babies and they really enjoy it!
